Thank you for planning to join us in Plein Air Paint OUT Amongst the Perennials on June 4th for our third annual plein air event. We look forward to having you here and know that you will enjoy your time in our beautiful Arboretum.
Rules and Guidelines
Prior to registering, please review the Plein Air Rules and Guidelines. You will be asked to sign this form when you have your surfaces stamped. All registered artists must agree to these rules to participate in the competition.
Garden Locations
Artists will choose or be assigned a location in the May Arboretum and Rancho San Rafael Park in which to paint in the medium of their choice. Artists are welcome to paint anywhere in the gardens, including across the bridge into the oak groves. Please see the interactive map to read about each garden.
Artists are responsible for their own supplies, including chair, easel, paint, etc.
Entry Categories & Registration
- Artist Competitive – $25
- Artist Non-Competitive- $25
- Same day registration – $35
YOUTH PARTICIPATION OPTIONS
Younger artists, ages 7-13, are encouraged to participate in the plein air competition. The entry fee will be $15.
Online artist registration is open until 9:00 p.m. May 30th.
Artists may register on the day of the event at 8:30 a.m.
There will be no refunds on registration.

Student Art Instruction Groups
Two student group art instructions sessions will be taught for kids 7-13 years old. Each session is limited to 5 students.

Painting Competition Submission
12:30 PM – Plein Air Exhibit Tent
At submission, the entire back of submitted artwork must be visible so that the authentication stamp is visible.
Plein Air Competition Judging
12:30 PM to 1:00 PM
The judges evaluate each competition entry for composition, originality, presentation, skill, technique, and the freshness that is the spirit of plein air. The Exhibit Area is closed to the public (including artists) during judging.
Plein Air Exhibit and Sale
1:00 PM to 1:30 PM – Plein Air Exhibit Tent
Art Sales
Artist receives 70% of sale amount of painting with 30% going to the May Arboretum Society.
Refunds
Refunds are not available.

May Arboretum Society also reserves the right to refuse plein air competition registration to future events to any individuals who do not follow the Rules and Guidelines or conduct themselves in other unethical or fraudulent behavior or actions.
